The consumer streak that had been ingrained in us for some 50 years put a real chokehold on our competency as makers. Sewing and other skills used to be much more common. Look at pattern books for knittting, crochet and sewing from the 1930s and they assume the reader has a knowledge of techniques and materials that modern books now take great pains to describe to their readers.
