A Collaborative Wedding Gift
While making/creating is a sometimes solitary pursuit their are opportunities for collaborating which I love to explore. Back in April I asked if any Boston Handmade members or alumni would be interested in collaborating on a quilt to give to Crystal Hanehan (now an alumni and soon to be Sloane). I tried to leave the options open: Create something on your own, or with my help and supplies in a group situation; No sewing required; Use traditional techniques or not... make it your own, make it with love. Have some fun and see what we can make together. I had so much fun coordinating this project and think that the final quilt is really fun and represents the range of talents beautifully.

Handmade Bonding
Planning a wedding can be a very stressful time, with lots of decision-making and organizing. During my own wedding, I try to find things we can do ourselves - not only to cut costs, but it seems more personal when I get to really be a part of the process. I have found the process to be fun and a bonding time for my fiance and me as well as my family members and good friends that I've recruited to help out!
Above is a picture of me printing out all our wedding invitations - we later had to assemble all the pieces and wrap with ribbon.
Here is a picture of my fiance Evan working so diligently on our wedding favors gift tins.
Here are my friends helping to assemble our wedding programs that double as fans! ;)
These butterflies will soon become place cards at the reception - and will rest on the wine glasses!
Hopefully next month, I'll be able to share some more photos of the final products displayed during the big day! :)

Handmade wedding scrapbook...
I was very diligent about using local and handmade products in my wedding...it's important to remember that often, going local and handmade can SAVE you money in your wedding planning. Going local and handmade is also a great way to support your local economy and in these times, that's such an important thing to do. A far larger portion of your dollars spent locally will STAY local. Also, when you buy items direct from the artist, you cut out the middle men, which saves you money and puts more money in the pockets of the artist.
All preaching aside, here's my scrapbook! I'm a Boston Handmade outlier in that I'm the only NH member (I was a founding member, before the geographic rules were in place) so my choices are from near my home in NH, but you can make similar local choices near you!

Now then, let me point out the juicy handmade details, and this pic is all about "what the bride wore". For the wedding, my dress was purchased from a local dress shop right here on my Main St. I wore a floral and "birdy" hairpiece made by my sister. In order to make it stay put in my short spiky hair, I created and attached it to a white tulle headband.
My earrings are scrumptious floral hoops made by Heather Wang of Lowell, MA. Heather also made our wedding rings and my engagement ring.
The necklace was purchased from Nurit of NuArt Jewelry. Nurit is a regular vendor at Concord Arts Market, the market that I run here in NH. The market features artists and artisans from NH and MA, and a few from ME and VT too so it's a vortex of regionally created handmade goodness.
Becky Oh! made me a special bag for the day, because I needed something to carry my "little stuff" in.

In this pic I'm also holding the really cool wedding goblets made for us by Paul Haigh of Wiley Hill Mudworks in Londonderry, NH. We actually use these everyday now because they're really sturdy and just super cool!
Another thing to point out about this pic: we prioritized having live music over having a DJ...really it was one of our biggest priorities for the day. My husband is a working musician so that was very important to us. We had four local music groups that played, in addition to friends who performed special songs for us. In this pic I'm talking to Juanito Pascual. He's a flamenco guitarist based in Boston. He played the first part of our reception, with a fantastic dancer and percussionist. We also had the Blue Ribbon All-Star Band and the Crunchy Western Boys, two NH bands that made sure everybody was having a good time. The African-style drumming of local percussion troupe Araba-lon was our processional and recessional and set a fun tone for the whole day!
We got mouth watering food from three Main St. businesses: our local food Co-op, my parents shop (not everyone has a father who is a pastry chef, lol) and a European family-fun bistro.
Artist and friend Susan Schwake created this backdrop for the ceremony (and that's our friend Steve Cooney of the Blue Ribbon All Star Band singing to us):

Her artwork was also the basis for the GREAT invitations that our very own Jessica Burko of Boston Handmade made for us!
And the whole day simply would not have been complete without the talents of the Flashback Hoops girls and the fantastic hoop that they MADE for me:

And to us, that was the perfect day. Surrounded by friends and family and handmade goodness and local food and music...and hula-hooping to bluegrass...! As you plan events in your life, always remember that you might find just the right ingredients for your perfect day, right in your own backyard, or on your own Main St., or direct from an artist who has put tremendous skill and care into their work.

Wedding bells are ringing!
Seems like every May and June, brides (and grooms) everywhere are coming out of the woodwork to plan their weddings...and I love being a part of it! I've been working on cake toppers like crazy lately and I thought I'd show off a few of the custom ones I've recently completed. The one above is really wacky, for a wonderfully wacky couple! Aqua and red is my new favorite color combo and is the groom's bat wings really make the piece....magical. :)
Ben really liked this one and said he wanted me to remake it for our wedding. The moon groom and owl bride make a most unusual pair and the cardboard bass will be well played throughout to reception I'm sure.
This adorable duo also makes an unusual pair. I can only guess at the inside jokes and pet names required to make this couple request such a topper. I just love how it turned out!
This mouse couple of England will top a cake made from cheese...that is if the mini mice pair don't eat it all before the real bride and groom get a slice.
This piece isn't a wedding cake topper or really a cake topper at all. But it's built like one and came out so cute that I couldn't help sharing it with you.
This traditional piece is modest and elegant. Perfect for this super adorable couple.
This after-wedding keepsake box will be gifted to the bride and groom from a very generous friend. This kind of gesture always melts my heart!
And lastly, this one holds the faces of a very special bride and groom!
I just loved creating all of these toppers and am always tickled when I get a request to make something completely different. And if you're interested in ordering your own custom cake topper, visit my website and check out my custom cake topper order form. :)

Starting a handmade wedding off right!
Love certainly seems to be in the air here in the BH galaxy, and my life is no exception. My sweetie, Scott, and I are getting married this July 24th. When he asked me to marry him his next question was "What kind of ring would you like, because I know you, and I know you want something handmade and unique and I want you to have exactly what you want.". He also asked if I might know someone that I would LOVE to have make my ring...and my answer was YEEEESSSSS to getting married AND to the ring question!
Heather Wang is one of my very favorite local jewelers. She works out of the Western Ave Studios in Lowell, MA.
I know that I'm not really a "diamond" girl, so I was excited to be able to have something made that is beautiful but non-traditional: Worthy of an engagement, but not a typical engagement ring. When I went to talk to Heather, I told her that I was thinking about non-diamond stones and thought that a deep red might be perfect for me. It's a color that never goes out of style for me, one that I always come back to. She excitedly popped up and grabbed some gorgeous garnets that she had on hand...and a ring was born!

In my mind, this was a perfect way to start off the planning of a wedding that will surely incorporate many other handmade elements, or locally purchased ones.

Brainstorming DIY Wedding Ideas
As I go through my wedding checklists, I find myself most excited in daydreaming of all the fun things I can personally make to give our wedding some personal touches. I have been googling images of wedding reception decorations, gift favors, and more - to get inspiration of ideas of things I could make for my own wedding!
For example, since our wedding will be an outdoors, summertime wedding - I thought it'd be great to make something similar to these programs that double as fans to help cool down our guests during the ceremony!
If only I had the time - I think making some place cards similar to these would really make our reception stand out!
These funny strawberries were actually from a social gathering I went to, and think it'd be such a fun idea to serve such unique tasty treats at the wedding.
There are so many fun things to think and daydream about! Now if only I had the time to handmake it all!
And of course since MaJenta Designs, my handcrafted business, is such a large part of who I am now, I definitely want to incorporate those designs into our wedding somehow too! I'm thinking of making some sort of gift favors using these useful mint tins! :)
